Swedish
The basis of all Western massage, Swedish uses a variety of strokes to create a massage that can be relaxinjg to stimulating, depending on the needs of the client. Often used as a general full body massage, it can be combined with other modalities as well. By improving cardiovascular function and lymphatic drainage, it helps cleanse the body of toxins. It also improves organ and glandular function and can be used to warm up or cool down the muscles when exercising, and is a good preliminary to deeper tissue massage.
Neuromuscular Technique
By tracing a specific pattern over certain muscle groups, this technique, (as developed by Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O.) mainipulates the soft tissue while working with the central nervous system. The effect this has on the body is to release and actually repattern muscles contracted by stress and chronic repetitive movements, or traumatized by old or recent injury. NMT also promotes postural reintegration, and is extremely relaxing to the person receiving the treatment. It can be performed either deeply or lightly; it is beneficial regardless.
Lymphatic Drainage
Improving the ability of the lymphatic system (which works as part of the immune system), this technique strengthens the body against disease, allergy symptoms. arthritis, colds and other inflammatory conditions. The therapist uses an extremely light touch following the lymphatic vessels: attention is not on muscle tension but on the drawing of the lymph and toxins up through the surface of the skin.
Foot Reflexology
Without the use of oils or lotion, reflexology is the systematic application of pressure techniques to the foot. While receiving a soothing head and hand massage, treat your feet to a warm, detoxifying soak and exfoliation in minerals, sea salts and the essential oils of your choosing. Then relax into a reflexology session, wherein the therapist works reflex areas that correspond to other parts of the body, relieving tension and helping the body to seek its own balance.
Orthopedic/Injury/Sports Massage
In-depth, focused work, usually on specific areas, using range of motion, myofascial release, reciprocal inhibition, stretching and other techniques for healing injuries. This is interactive work requiring physical effort on the part of the client and constant communication between therapist and client; therefore it is not relaxing, but is very effective and is pain free.
Circulatory
Normalizes circulation and blood pressure. Is helpful for abnormal blood pressure (either high or low) and can be useful in treating diabetes, nervous disorders, varicose veins and hemorrhoids, and Raynaud's Disease. While the client focuses on his or her breathing and works with a specific visualization, the therapist uses a series of gentle squeezing and stroking movements designed to normalize the circulation in the body. This technique is also beneficial for many conditions involving metabolic imbalances and for localized disorders of tissues or organs in which an optimized blood supply can support recovery.
